No wine region is more revered for its refinement and mystery than Burgundy. And rightfully so! The wines that emerge from this disparate patchwork of plots and producers in central France--from Chablis in the north, through the Cote d’Or, all the way south to Beaujolais--have compelled the palates and captured the imaginations of generations of wine drinkers worldwide.
What makes the wines of Burgundy so special? While there is no single answer to this question, it is tempting to start simply: It’s the grapes. More precisely, it’s the inscrutable and perfect interplay between the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varietals and the clayey limestone soil for which Burgundy is famous. The great vineyards of the region are planted along the Kimmeridgian ridge, a prehistoric limestone basin that starts in England and runs south through Champagne and the Loire Valley all the way to Burgundy. There is much speculation and dispute as to the precise nature of the relationship between great wine and this limestone soil, but what is not in dispute is the unique and heartbreaking spirit and caliber of these wines.
